Aging Records Were Driving Expensive Assumptions

Large-diameter interceptors are critical, difficult to access, and costly to clean or replace. The utility needed a defensible picture of actual pipe condition before committing maintenance crews or capital funds.

Age and material had become stand-ins for physical condition. The robotic assessment later showed those attributes were not necessarily accurate indicators, exposing the risk of cleaning sound sections or advancing capital work before the evidence justified it.

  • Maintenance priorities relied too heavily on age and material.
  • Cleaning decisions needed evidence of actual debris and restricted flow.
  • Capital planning needed condition scores tied to observed defects.

Inspect First, Then Direct the Work

The utility adopted multi-sensor robotic inspection for its large interceptor network. High-definition video, laser profiling, and sonar established a richer condition record, while standardized PACP scoring converted observed defects into comparable ratings.

The program reversed the usual sequence. Interceptors were inspected before cleaning, then cleaning, repair, and replacement were directed toward demonstrated need. Digital condition records also gave program managers a basis for prioritization and later comparison.

The public record describes trained field collection and analysis, but it does not disclose the utility's long-term service terms. Those terms should be defined before another operator treats this deployment as a repeatable procurement model.

  • Select multi-sensor inspection suited to large-diameter interceptor conditions.
  • Inspect before cleaning and identify the sections that actually require intervention.
  • Use trained field crews and analysts to collect, process, and score the evidence.
  • Maintain digital condition records for maintenance and capital planning.
  • Set integration, training, and field-service responsibilities before scaling.

Condition Data Changed the Spending Plan

Across 260 inspected miles, the utility reported a $6.86 million reduction in cleaning costs and $26 million in capital improvement program savings. The figures are reported separately, with no combined savings claim.

The deeper gain was sharper asset triage. By demonstrating that pipe age and material were not necessarily reliable proxies for condition, the assessment helped direct cleaning, repair, and replacement toward assets with observed need.

Service Robot Co. is a full-service, OEM-neutral commercial robot integrator for US businesses. As a vendor neutral robot integrator, we select equipment across manufacturers, arrange financing, manage robot deployment and integration, train operators, and service every unit through a nationwide US engineer network.

A comparable path can begin with a free site assessment and commercial robot demo, continue through a robot pilot program, and move into inspection robot rental, purchase, or robot as a service. One vendor remains accountable for the whole lifecycle.

Frequently asked questions

Multi-sensor inspection can reveal debris, restricted flow, and structural condition before a cleaning crew is committed. In this case, inspect-to-clean decision-making accompanied a reported $6.86 million reduction in cleaning costs. Another network needs its own site assessment before expecting a similar result.
